South Mountain Co-op’s Spring Home-School Classes Begin March 24

Register now!    See class descriptions below.  Register by mailing in your payment along with this registration form to select your classes. 10 week session, Tuesdays/Thursdays from March 24- June 2.  There will be no classes held on April 12 and 14 due to Spring break.

Recreational Math with the The Good Times Math Gang (Ages 10-14)  10-11 am Thursdays, 10 classes, cost: $250

Facilitated by Steven Greenstein,  Assistant Professor of Mathematics Education at Montclair State University.

Hate Math? It’s not your fault. Love Math? We get it. The Good Times Math Gang is a subversive yet authentic dimension of recreational mathematical activity, a pioneering effort to engage your mathematical mind – and we know you have one. Whatever your prior experience – struggle or success – we’ll boost your math morale! Students in this course can expect to engage in opportunities to explore, wonder, think, play, reason, and question in the context of a variety of forms of mathematical activity, including problem solving, paper folding, game play, crafting, and moving around.                    

Chainmaille Jewelry Making Class (Ages 10-up) 11-12pm  Thursdays, 10 classes, cost: $250 + $25 materials fee (students will each receive  2 sets of pliers, and wire rings to keep)  Facilitated by Heidi Vickey-Uechi artist and founder Daisy Chain Jewelry.

Chainmaille jewelry is an ancient art form that anyone can learn. All it takes is two pliers and rings of various sizes and you are on your way. This class will teach the basics and expose the students to several different types of chainmaille weaves. We will explore Byzantine, European 4 in 1, Mobius, and Japanese 12 in 2 among others. Students will also be free to create their own designs using the provided materials. We will combine the traditional chainmaille rings with charms and beads to create earrings, bracelets and necklaces. Emphasis is placed on learning new skills and having fun in the process of creating.

This hands-on class is appropriate for children aged 10 and up. Younger children are also welcome, especially those with excellent fine motor skills and attention to detail.

Special Effects Make-up  (Ages 10-up) 12-1pm Thursdays, 10 classes, cost: $250  Facilitated by the highly acclaimed multi-media artist Gina Velasquez.

This class will cover the basics and then delve into various techniques of special effects and gory make-up.  Students will learn techniques for simulating bruised eye, burn, slashed throat, bullet hole with black eye, burn, and cuts with glass chards & stitches. Not recommended for individuals with highly sensitive skin or with chemical sensitivities.

Hands-on Science  (Ages 8-12) 11-12:30 pm Tuesdays, beginning on March 29. 8 classes, cost: $275  Facilitated by a certified High School Science educator.

This Inquiry based class will engage kids’ curiosity and encourage them to explore and experiment with basic scientific concepts. In class students will each have the opportunity to perform their own experiment with their own set of supplies and materials.
